Same-sex Marriage has been discussed for centuries both in public and behind closed doors. Either the canvass is caused by curiosity or some series purposes; it demonstrates that the topic is no longer a thin, but a focus that the world may draw attention to. This is a very controversial issue because there are many different opinions about this topic. Some traditional people couldn’t accept homosexuality because they think this is immoral. For me, I support that gay or lesbian marriage should be legalized as I consider that every person is equal, and everyone has the right to pursue his true love. Firstly, since heterosexual can get married, why not homosexual get married? Everyone can have their own choices and do what they like as long as they don’t harm or bother others. Every one is equal and has liberty to make his own decision. Secondly, if the government passes the law that gays or lesbians can get married legally, the demonstrations protested by hermaphrodites will decrease. Thirdly, as gay marriages are legalized, the discriminations against gays and lesbians will be diminished.

Western countries, certain religions taught that homosexuality was immoral and illegal, and some western religions taught anti-homosexual hatred since 12 century. This circumstance continued until early 20 century. The landmark events appeared in Germany and America. In Germany, an activity center and a library were built in Berlin in the 1920s though they were both destroyed by Nazi in 1939. And here presents the situation in the USA as a detail instance. Since the early 20 century, most major American cities have had restaurants, bars, cabarets, and other commercial facilities serving as meeting places for homosexuals. But hostility toward gays grew during the Great Depression of the 1930s and in the wake of the Second War. By the 1950s, then, gays were portrayed as threats to social harmony and subjected to considerable discrimination. Just after that, most of the discriminatory policies put in place between the 1930s and 1950s were ended between the 1960s and 1990s, and more positive ideas about homosexuals developed. In 1973, homosexuality was no more a mental disorder and deleted from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Recent years, several states of the USA (and western countries like Holland, The Britain, Canada and so on) have passed laws to allow homosexual marriage. Now homosexuals have become a significant presence in American culture.( Same-Sex Marriage, Civil Unions, and Domestic Partnerships ).In addition to the United States(Argentina hosts first gay marriage in Latin America), the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, South Africa and Sweden have also adopted the same-sex marriage bill. So Same-sex marriage around the world.

I became interested in this topic when I was in middle school. Though I am not a lesbian or bisexual myself, I recognize that this large group of people needs proper concern and regard. They may not want to be a gay or lesbian, but the society pushes them into the different world and discriminate them in return.
Parents are anxious that their one child will produce grandchildren; Also the ideal family structure for children is a two-parent, mother-father family. when children have their own mother and his father, this is a complete happy family. The two women or two men can not give a child a warm and harmonious home. Homosexually parented children are more likely to experience sexual confusion, and engage in homosexual and bisexual behavior themselves. This is very bad for children’s growth, children can not have normal growth environment, so their behavior are quite different from other children, such as abuse alcohol and drugs and attempt suicide.

In the Law, due to the presence of discrimination, several measures should be taken to ensure gays and lesbians’ civil rights.First is to form a public consensus against persecution and violence against homosexuals.
Second is to proceed at the local level and to afford more affirmative support for the homosexual minority. Families, local government, communities and companies should play significant roles in this step.
Third is to proceed at both national and local levels and would represent movement, at the appropriate time, toward fully equal treatment of lesbians and gay men by the state. The primary national reform would be a directive or statute prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination by private employers, restaurants and other public accommodations, and apartment houses.
In a word, homosexuals require not civil union, but the right to marry; not special benefits, but be fairly regarded.
The place of gay people in society remains a subject of debate, especially the question of gay marriage. But many of the major institutions that once demonized gay people, including the government, the media, and the medical profession, now support gay people. In courts of law, lawyers representing gay people usually have the support of scientific authorities, including social workers, family experts, and legal scholars.
In fact, not only tolerance, but also understanding to homosexuals is a represent of civilization. This course of action encourages gay men and lesbians to explore their potential talent in all fields which can receive an excellent ending.
Discrimination towards homosexuality is infeasible; so why not contribute to a society that fairly regards homosexuality?
To sum up, we advocate that gay marriages should be legalized will not only reveal equal rights but also reduce many problems.

Thought provoking! I am a gay friendly person myself, with relatives and friends that are homosexuals, and they are the loveliest sunniest people I know..I suppose that in the past it was frowned upon to be gay, but these days it is more commonplace than not. Anyway, I think it is more a matter of the church and tradition than present day norms and values why same sex marriage is not actually that, but a civil union. Because it was once treated as a taboo, so imagine what would happen if they just all of a sudden decided to change the law - people would think everything is possible.
ReplyDeleteNicole, I think your topic is quite interested because I have never think about same-sex marriage this problem and discuss this topic with my friends. However, I support your point: “that gay or lesbian marriage should be legalized as I consider that every person is equal, and everyone has the right to pursue his true love. Firstly, since heterosexual can get married, why not homosexual get married? Everyone can have their own choices and do what they like as long as they don’t harm or bother others. Every one is equal and has liberty to make his own decision.” Absolutely right, we have our own decision. We don’t have to think about what parents’ thinking or another people’s thinking. I think even it’s heterosexual marriage , it doesn’t mean that we feel happiness.

ReplyDelete"everyone has the right to pursue his true love" so true, I support same-sex marriage. People who are against insists that same-sex marriage reduce the birthrate but stopping same-sex marriage won't force them to marry to opposite-sex and have a baby. People are equal, and surly they must be respected from others. It is an irony to be treated differently just because they are in love with same-sex.
ReplyDeleteI support the same-sex marriage.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason of gays and lesbian want a marriage because they want to be accepted by the majority group in the society. They want the society treat them fairly.Just like Nicole you write in the artical,"homosexuals require not civil union, but the right to marry; not special benefits, but be fairly regarded."
P.S.Black background makes my eyes so tired...
I believe that LOVE is nothing with age, contry, different and sexuality. But people have to decide is that the one you really want to take care of. Or is she/he worth it? Dont choose the one who is perfect, choose the who who fit you. People, just go ahead, to find your true and endless love.
ReplyDeleteIt was really interesting topic. I think it is just a matter of religion. Like, christians are oppose on same-sex marriage.
ReplyDeleteI also support same-sex marriage. We have no right to say it is right or wrong in loving with someone. So, same-sex marriage should be treated equally as others.
Loving someone with same sex isn't really an awkward thing nowadays. (well it still is to phobias..~~) I guess it is kind of a personal preference. You don't make up feelings on someone you choose, you just get to know after you fell in love with someone and it could be either a woman or a man.But as some countries legally allow same-sex marriage, it is getting more like.. popular?? I guess. I wouldn't say it's wrong or bad, but it may be better with opposite sex for the future.
